What’s the Difference Between High-Functioning Autism and Asperger’s?

High-functioning autism and Asperger’s share many similarities, but there are key differences in how they’ve been understood. Asperger’s syndrome was once a separate diagnosis, describing individuals on the autism spectrum with average or above-average intelligence and no significant delays in language development.

High-functioning autism, on the other hand, refers to individuals on the spectrum who can manage daily life with minimal support but may still face social and sensory challenges. Unlike Asperger’s, high-functioning autism often includes mild early language delays.

Today, Asperger’s is no longer an official diagnosis. In 2013, it was folded into the broader term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the DSM-5. This means both Asperger’s and high-functioning autism are now considered part of the same spectrum, just with varying levels of support needs.

At All Star ABA, we focus less on labels and more on helping each child thrive. Whether your child has been described as high-functioning or has an Asperger’s diagnosis, we tailor ABA therapy in Maryland to their unique strengths and challenges.
