What Are the Signs of Autism in a 4-Year-Old?

Autism signs often become clearer around age four, as social expectations grow. Every child is different, but common indicators in a 4-year-old include:

  • Social Challenges: Difficulty making friends, limited eye contact, or preferring solitary play.

  • Communication Delays: Limited vocabulary, repetitive language, or trouble having back-and-forth conversations.

  • Repetitive Behaviors: Engaging in repeated movements like spinning or hand-flapping, or sticking rigidly to routines.

  • Sensory Sensitivities: Strong reactions to lights, sounds, textures, or tastes.

  • Narrow Interests: Intense focus on specific topics or activities, often excluding others.

Early detection and intervention, like ABA therapy, can significantly help children develop essential skills. ABA therapy is highly effective at building communication, social skills, and reducing challenging behaviors.

If you notice any of these signs, an evaluation can provide clarity and set your child up for success.

At All Star ABA, our dedicated therapists create personalized ABA therapy programs in Maryland tailored to your child’s unique strengths and needs.
