What Are the Three Main Causes of Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition. While no single factor explains its onset, experts consistently point to three primary influences:

  • Genetic Factors: Studies show that autism often runs in families. Specific gene variations can affect brain development, increasing the likelihood of ASD.

  • Environmental Factors: Prenatal influences such as maternal infections, exposure to certain medications or chemicals, complications at birth, and parental age may contribute to autism risk.

  • Neurological Development: Differences in brain structure and connectivity are linked to how individuals with autism process information, communicate, and interact socially.

Understanding these causes helps families recognize that autism is not the result of parenting style or personal choices, it is a multifaceted condition shaped by biology and environment.
