What Age Is Autism Usually Diagnosed?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often diagnosed between 18 months and 3 years of age, though signs can appear earlier. According to the CDC, some children show developmental differences as early as 12 months, but most formal diagnoses happen around age 2 to 3, when delays in communication, social interaction, and behavior become more noticeable.

Early signs may include limited eye contact, delayed speech, lack of interest in peers, or repetitive behaviors. Pediatricians typically screen for autism at 18- and 24-month well-child visits. However, some children especially those with milder symptoms may not receive a diagnosis until school age.


Early diagnosis is crucial. It allows families to start ABA therapy sooner, helping children develop communication skills, reduce challenging behaviors, and build independence.
