Is Autism More Common Today Than It Was 20 Years Ago?
Yes, autism is diagnosed more frequently today than it was two decades ago. In the early 2000s, estimates suggested 1 in 150 children had autism. Today, the CDC reports that about 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This rise doesn’t necessarily mean autism is more prevalent; it reflects improved awareness, broader diagnostic criteria, and better access to screening.
More families, educators, and healthcare providers now recognize early signs of autism, such as delayed speech, repetitive behaviors, or difficulty with social interaction. As a result, children are being evaluated and supported earlier, leading to more accurate data and timely intervention.
At All Stars ABA, we believe early identification leads to better outcomes. Our team provides personalized ABA therapy in Maryland that helps children build essential life skills, no matter when they’re diagnosed.
