What Parents Can Expect in Their Child’s First Month of ABA?

Starting ABA therapy is a big step, and the first month is all about building a foundation for success. Parents often wonder what to expect, and while every child’s journey is unique, here are some common experiences:

1. Initial Assessments and Goal Setting

During the first sessions, a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will assess your child’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. From this, they’ll create an individualized treatment plan with clear goals.

2. Building Relationships

Your child will begin working with a therapist (RBT) who focuses on creating trust and rapport. The first weeks often look like play, but this connection is key to successful learning.

3. Data Collection

Therapists carefully track your child’s behaviors, responses, and progress. Parents may notice therapists writing notes or using tablets—this data ensures therapy stays effective.

4. Introduction of Skills

Simple, achievable goals are introduced first. These may include basic communication, following directions, or reducing challenging behaviors.

5. Parent Involvement

You’ll receive guidance on strategies to reinforce skills at home, helping ensure consistency and faster progress.

The first month sets the stage for long-term growth, combining patience, structure, and teamwork.
