How to Prepare a Child with Autism for a New School Year?

A new school year can bring excitement, but for children with autism, it may also create stress due to changes in routine and environment. With thoughtful preparation, parents can ease the transition and set their child up for success.

1. Reintroduce Routines Early

Start adjusting sleep, wake-up, and mealtime schedules a couple of weeks before school begins. Predictability helps reduce anxiety.

2. Visit the School in Advance

If possible, tour the classroom, meet the teacher, and explore important areas like the cafeteria or playground. Familiarity makes the first day less overwhelming.

3. Use Visual Supports

Create a visual schedule that outlines the school day such as getting dressed, bus ride, classroom, and recess. This helps children anticipate what’s coming next.

4. Practice Social Scenarios

Role-play common situations like raising a hand, greeting a teacher, or sitting at a desk. This builds confidence and reduces uncertainty.

5. Communicate with the School Team

Share your child’s strengths, triggers, and calming strategies with teachers and staff. Collaboration ensures consistency between home and school.
