When Do Children Get Diagnosed with Autism?

Autism is often diagnosed between the ages of 2 and 3, but it can be identified earlier or later depending on the individual.

Early signs of autism, like difficulty with communication, social interaction, or repetitive behaviors, can be noticed in babies or toddlers. However, a formal diagnosis typically takes place after observing the child’s development and behavior over time.

The earlier the diagnosis, the sooner children can receive support tailored to their needs.

Autism Signs to Watch For in Early Childhood

Parents might first notice signs of autism as early as 6 months, but diagnosis usually happens closer to 18 months or 2 years.

Key signs include limited eye contact, delayed speech development, and an intense focus on specific routines or objects. Some children may also show a lack of interest in socializing with others. It’s important to remember that every child with autism is unique, so signs can vary widely.

If you’re concerned about your child's development, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional who specializes in autism. Early intervention for autism is crucial and can make a significant difference in a child’s development.
